Richard Alan Long

A Martyr for the Brokenhearted

Joy division playing Love will tear us apart

On a train journey filled with war and peace

Echoes and images of my past life in glorious Technicolor

Gazing at my reflection and feeling romantic disgust

Discovering new scars just as the old ones heal

Smell of freshly cut grass in the summer air

Joy division playing Love will tear us apart

Sunday dinners in hot stuffy rooms

Watching with disinterest old John Wayne movies

Trying to find sleep but finding sleep won’t find me

Seeing her face electric and unfeeling

Wanting to phone friends who no longer care

Punching the walls until my knuckles scream with feeling

Joy division playing Love will tear us apart

Making progress but sinking in the sentimental snow

Having fucked up nightmares of us together in fucked up places

Wondering how much damage a soul can actually take

Wishing that I could become more mechanical like everyone else

Hearing her name and wanting to be part of it

Joy division playing Love will tear us apart

I’ve Got My Summer Right Now

I loved her until my eyes stung

She could sing dance and create

She could do anything

She always had this amazing ability

To smile away all my blues

I watched her drown peacefully

I held her hand tenderly

Sound of a carnival over my shoulder

The smell of her sweat on my neck

Her kicking feet across my shins

I let go of her locked fingers

I kissed them one by one

And sensed a single beat of her heart

Black mascara unfocused eyes watching me

Looking up through me at the summer sky

I walked away looking at the dirty ground

Dead scarlet leaves wet and stuck to my boots

Someone far away shouts for a second chance

Music filled the air with images of her face

And I can’t help but think

She’d never looked this beautiful

The Woman at the Window

There’s a woman at my bedroom window

She’s been watching me for weeks

Every night she comes to see me

She has pallid skin and violet lips

Her hair is the colour of Autumn leaves

It sticks to her face, wet and claw like

She comes up from the ground at night

roams the graves for her belongings

She asks if I think she looks pretty

I am scared so I always say yes

She smiles with teeth as black as the sky

She tells me tales of her man far away

I told my parents and they left silently

Every night dad stands at my window

My mother is worried and worn

After several days, my parents give up

They tell me the nightmares must have passed

Until one night she returned

She smiled a joyless smile

I saw her eyes flooded with tears

I don't know why but I opened the window

I wanted to show them she wasn’t a dream

Her hands clamped to my throat cold and stinging

She whispered to me her name

She said she never got the chance to feel love

My parents found me on my bedroom floor

We swapped rooms and they slept in my place

One night when the sky was dark I heard my dad shouting

My mother was crying and saying it was a mistake

I shout for them and all was silent

My dad came to me and gripped me so tight
